Sedation Dentistry
Sedation uses medications to help patients relax during dental procedures. It is appropriate for people who:
- Have a low pain threshold.
- Cannot sit still in the dentist's chair.
- Need to complete a large amount of dental work.
Anti-Anxiety Medications
The most commonly prescribed medication for treating anxiety belongs to the benzodiazepine family. Examples include: Valium, Halcion, Xanax, or Ativan. These drugs reduce anxiety by binding to and dampening the activity of fear receptors in the brain.
